In early June, academic non-profit Ithaka S+R released its in-depth report on the research of agriculture scholars<\/a> as part of its ongoing program to explore the research activities of scholars by discipline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the report, an ongoing concern is how to effectively communicate the value of agriculture research to the wider public.\u00a0 Outreach to the public is a key component of the land-grant mission, and agriculture scholars are concerned that the public does not understand the value and insights of their research.<\/em>\u00a0 (Not to mention, if your research is not easily available and understandable to the public, it will be less likely to inform important policy decisions<\/a>.)\u00a0 The report mentions digital media platforms and social networking as channels with the potential to strengthen public communication.<\/p>\n

How Pendergrass Library can help:<\/p>\n

1) Choosing where to publish?\u00a0 We support publishing in open access journals like <\/strong>PeerJ<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0<\/strong> A great deal of scholarly publishing exists behind paywalls.\u00a0 Open access or open research is a movement to make scholarly research openly available to the public.\u00a0 Pendergrass has an institutional agreement with PeerJ<\/em><\/a> to cover the cost of publishing.\u00a0 Did you know PeerJ <\/em>will also promote your work on its social media account?<\/p>\n
