University classes are online and UT Libraries\u2019\ncollections and services are available to help them. Students can access\ne-books, journal articles, research guides, films, and more from their\ncomputers and mobile devices 24 hours a day. They can chat with a librarian to\nfind the resources they need, receive help citing sources, and get answers to\nquestions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe library went online decades ago,\u201d said Steve Smith, dean\nof libraries. \u201cSo, in terms of services and collections, this is not a\ndifficult shift, because we are already there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To aid with the transition to online\nclasses, the Libraries launched lib.utk.edu\/contingency<\/em><\/a>, which summarizes library services and collections that are\navailable remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In-depth research assistance is\navailable by contacting the librarian who specializes in a particular\ndiscipline at lib.utk.edu\/askusnow<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has been interesting that what I\nhave been doing has not changed since the university has moved classes online,\u201d\nsaid engineering librarian Jeanine Williamson. “I am staying in touch with\nstudents from a civil engineering class that need help this time of year. I\nwill be helping a [Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer\nSciences] graduate student with his literature review. The main differences are\nthat I miss seeing my colleagues in person and that my cat keeps on trying to\nget my attention!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 80 percent of the Libraries\u2019\ncollections budget is used to acquire online resources. Since the university\u2019s decision\nto move to an online learning environment, librarians have been negotiating\nwith the publishers of large e-book and e-journal packages to extend the\nLibraries\u2019 subscriptions to an unlimited number of simultaneous users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know that everyone misses our physical spaces, and we miss the students being here,\u201d Smith said. \u201cBut it gives me peace of mind to know that we are encouraging safety. Because so many library resources are available online, we can all \u2014 students and staff \u2014 work remotely and protect the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
