We will build on our momentum, continuing our mission of excellence in service, programs, and initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a look back at our 2024 highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A grant-funded team of Special Collections librarians visited Paris, France, in the summer to research the life and work of <a href=\"https:\/\/volumes.lib.utk.edu\/features\/ut-libraries-acquires-delaney-collection\/\">Knoxville-born artist Beauford Delaney<\/a>. UT Libraries holds Delaney\u2019s complete personal archive. The visit will inform the Libraries\u2019 future and digital exhibits. The <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/beauford-delaney-papers-now-available-to-researchers\/\">Beauford Delaney Papers also were opened to researchers<\/a> in January.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries for the first time partnered with Knoxville\u2019s world-renowned Big Ears music festival to present Boundless: Artists in the Archives, which featured singer-songwriter <a href=\"https:\/\/volumes.lib.utk.edu\/boundless\/amythyst-kiah\/\">Amythyst Kiah<\/a>. Kiah\u2019s original composition was inspired by firsthand accounts \u2014 preserved in the Libraries\u2019 archives \u2014 of the deadly wildfires that swept through Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains in 2016.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries continued preparations for shifting collections to the planned Library Storage Annex. Librarians <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/03\/ut-libraries-reviewing-physical-collections-to-meet-campus-needs\/\">began an intensive review of the Libraries\u2019 physical collections,<\/a> removing outdated or rarely circulated titles and designating others for the move to the soon-to-be-built annex. The annex will provide long-term preservation and storage for lesser-used collections.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Staff have been hard at work on a completely <a href=\"https:\/\/live-libraries-mainsite.pantheonsite.io\/\">redesigned UT Libraries website<\/a> to streamline access to library services and resources. The new site will launch in spring 2025.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Chris Durman, coordinator of the George F. DeVine Music Library and a treasure trove of music history, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/utklibraries\/posts\/pfbid02D4XjsTkaWdNz9yuzRsvTi7Tr8kQ3CQdPga8M1NY7Rrg1zQR2w7kCzvvhTUSGoFTsl\">interviewed by BBC Radio<\/a> about the history and cultural significance of the Graceland Mansion.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Katie Hannah, new director of the University of Tennessee Press, joined the UT Libraries family on April 1. She <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/new-director-shares-enthusiasm-vision-for-ut-press\/\">set the direction<\/a> of the Press to expand its author list to more closely reflect Tennessee\u2019s diverse population and to create opportunities for students interested in the field of book publishing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Exhibits of materials from the Betsey B. Creekmore Special Collections and University Archives highlighted UT Libraries\u2019 holdings related to <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/10\/the-pursuit-of-justice-evidence-from-our-special-collections\/\">The Pursuit of Justice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCXN4T_xeaR\/\">artists\u2019 books<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/07\/exhibit-celebrates-100th-anniversary-of-the-smoky-mountains-hiking-club\/\">Smoky Mountains Hiking Club<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/exhibit-in-special-collections-honors-frederick-douglass-black-history-month\/\">Black History Month<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries continues to invest in preparing K-12 students to be college-ready. The Community Learning and Engagement department hosted hundreds of elementary through high school students from schools across East Tennessee. They engaged in hands-on learning with Libraries <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/ut-libraries-welcomes-high-school-students-for-boss-stem-conference\/\">STEM initiatives<\/a>, learned how to conduct research within library resources, and imagined themselves as college students with tours across campus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries made many <a href=\"https:\/\/old.lib.utk.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/whats-new-library-resources-and-free-e-textbooks-available-in-canvas\/\">library services and resources accessible to students directly from Canvas<\/a>, the portal through which students access and submit course assignments. Through the Libraries\u2019 Canvas presence, students can access electronic textbooks that the library purchases, thus saving students, collectively, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Students can also directly access hundreds of databases, self-paced learning tools such as tutorials and research guides, and chat online with a librarian.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Webster C. Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/utklibraries\/posts\/pfbid02zG4J15Z961FECt5YBKviTXQ7BMtqp9XyYJK9T4Hk7MLR7WBBM3ksqKpd8ruCDXYz\">Collaborative Program of the Year award<\/a> from UT\u2019s Division of Student Life for its efforts to address food insecurity on campus. The library\u2019s Big Orange Pocket Pantry provides food and hygiene essentials to students, faculty, and staff.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries\u2019 staff, initiatives, resources, exhibits, and collections were featured in 22 news stories in international, national, and local media including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/a-luxury-that-we-cant-afford\">Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a>, local National Public Radio affiliate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuot.org\/arts\/2024-07-29\/katie-hannah-on-the-university-of-tennessee-press\">WUOT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraryjournal.com\/story\/university-of-tennessee-knoxville-delivering-on-the-expectations-of-digital-native-users-lj240608\">Library Journal<\/a>, Knoxville News Sentinel, WBIR Channel 10, and WATE Channel 6.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>UT Libraries was featured in eight campus and student news media stories, including in the Daily Beacon and <a href=\"https:\/\/torchbearer.utk.edu\/2024\/05\/bringing-a-legacy-home\/\">Torchbearer magazine<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2024, UT Libraries served a record number of students, strengthened academic offerings through involvement in curriculum committees across colleges, including the new College of Emerging and Collaborative Studies, and forged partnerships that propelled UT Libraries initiatives to the global stage.
