In 2010, the University of Tennessee Libraries and the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA<\/a>), received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH<\/a>) to participate in the NEH\/Library of Congress<\/a>‘ National Digital Newspaper Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the project focused on the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. In August 2012, TNDP received NEH funding to continue the project, and this time focused on newspapers published during the Gilded Age (1870s to 1900). The third phase of the project focused newspapers from 1915 to 1922, providing statewide coverage of World War One, and the 19th Amendment.<\/p>\n

Titles were selected by a statewide panel of historians, genealogists, educators, librarians, and journalism scholars. The selection covers the broadest scope possible, encompassing the state\u2019s three Grand Divisions, featuring Confederate and Union papers, and representing diverse political perspectives.<\/p>\n

TSLA created the new duplicate negatives from their microfilms masters, which were then digitized, and are now made available through\u00a0Chronicling America<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
